Cambodia held its general election on July 23, 2023 and provisional results by the National Election Committee showed that the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won 120 out of 125 parliamentary seats. Prior to the national elections this year, there were rumors, speculations, predictions, and analyses regarding the future of Cambodian politics, particularly regarding when and how the power transfer. However, all doubts had been dispelled when Prime Minister Hun Sen delivered a special video message announcing that he would step down from power and named General Hun Manet as the next prime minister, while at the same time, paving the way for the younger generation to take place in the new Cabinet. General Hun Manet is expected to begin his role as the prime minister on 22 August 2023. What can be expected from this power transfer?
