Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is one among the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, is expected to revolutionize all aspects of life in this digital age. Still, potential threats posed by AI has sparked off an intense debate among scientists and experts. In his book titled “Brief Answers to the Big Questions”, Stephen Hawking, the world-renowned theoretical physicist, warned that, “…the advent of super-intelligent AI would be either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence. A super-intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we’re in trouble.”
To see whether such optimism and pessimism about AI, to some extent, are true, we need to understand what AI really is. What is AI? How much do we know about AI?
